Pistole testifies before Congress on allowing small knives
Transportation Security Administration chief John Pistole on Thursday defended the agency's plan to allow small knives and other objects in carry-on bags in testimony before a congressional panel. N.D. lawmakers to TSA: Replace the scanners you took
Lawmakers from North Dakota urged the Transportation Security Administration in a letter to replace the body scanners taken from airports in Bismarck, Minot and Grand Forks. The TSA is replacing the first generation of body scanners with newer models that comply with the Federal Aviation Administration Modernization and Reform Act. The Forum (Fargo, N.D.-Moorhead, Minn.) Senators ask for investigation into Newark screening lapse
Sens. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., and Bob Menendez, D-N.J., sent a letter to the Transportation Security Administration urging an investigation into a TSA security lapse at Newark Airport. In a Feb. 25 test, an undercover TSA agent managed to get through a TSA screening checkpoint at the airport with a model improvised explosive device. New York Post (3/14)

Boeing said it could install a fix for 787 batteries and have the aircraft return to flying soon. Employment at U.S. airlines dipped in Jan.
Employment at U.S. airlines dipped by 0.5% in January from the same month last year, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. U.S. airlines employed 582,643 full-time equivalent employees in January, compared to 585,699 a year ago. The Wall Street Journal/Dow Jones Newswires (3/14)

Southwest has firm order for 31 Boeing aircraft, exec says
Southwest Airlines could buy more Boeing aircraft to help the carrier expand service, according to Brian Hirshman, senior vice president of technical operations. "Next year we have firm orders of 31 airplanes from Boeing, all -800s, and we're looking at is that enough or do we need to substitute that with some used airplanes," he said. Southwest is also the launch customer for the Boeing 737 MAX, which is due out around 2017. Reuters (3/12)

American-Republic contract for regional flying receives approval
American Airlines received court approval for its deal with Republic Airways Holdings to operate regional jets. Republic will fly 47 Embraer jets under the American Eagle brand under the contract, which lasts for 12 years. The jets will seat up to 76 passengers. U.S. airlines compete for expanded service to Brazil
U.S. airlines are competing for expanded airline service to Sao Paulo, Brazil. An agreement with Brazil will allow 14 additional weekly flights this year, but U.S. carriers have applied for 28 additional flights.
