Nevirapine use at birth linked to greater odds of drug resistance
Administration of extended nevirapine prophylaxis among babies infected with HIV by 6 weeks of age was associated with a higher risk of resistance to the drug later, compared with babies who didn't have HIV at 6 weeks but did by 6 months of age, a study showed. AAP revises statement on screening for retinopathy of prematurity
Carefully scheduled retinal examinations should be conducted by a knowledgeable and experienced ophthalmologist on preterm babies at risk for retinopathy of prematurity, the American Academy of Pediatrics said in a policy statement published in the journal Pediatrics. San Francisco looks to decrease black infant mortality rate
Health officials in San Francisco are looking for ways to reduce the rate of deaths among black infants, which is currently six times the mortality rate for white infants. Across California, the mortality rate for black infants dropped 21% between 2008 and 2010 to record low levels. Enrollment in U.S. nursing schools is on the rise
A report from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing shows increases in nursing-school enrollments in 2012. Entry-level baccalaureate programs grew by 3.5%. Plagiocephaly linked to delayed development at age 3
Three-year-olds with a history of deformational plagiocephaly scored lower than those without cranial deformation on all measures of the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, a study in the journal Pediatrics showed. Researchers said that the biggest differences in developmental scores between the two groups were in cognition, parent-reported adaptive behavior and language, while the smallest was in motor development. Smoking biggest risk factor for oral cleft defects in the U.S.
The CDC found that an estimated 7,000 U.S. children are born with a cleft lip or cleft palate annually. Treatment for these conditions yields excellent outcomes, an expert said. A March of Dimes report cited prenatal smoking as the biggest risk factor for oral clefts. HealthDay News (12/31)
