- Could patent ruling lead to a BlackBerry ban?
Nokia said today that it has begun attempts in three countries, including the U.S., to enforce a Swedish arbitrator's ruling that Research In Motion must pay royalties to the Finnish phone maker or risk a ban on the sales of its BlackBerry phones. Analysts said, however, that it was much more likely that the companies would agree on a payment structure to compensate Nokia for use of its wireless LAN technology. "This could have a significant financial impact to RIM, as all BlackBerry devices support WLAN," IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo said. Reuters

- Mobile helps ring up sales on Cyber Monday
EBay reported that more than one-third of its Cyber Monday shoppers made their purchases over mobile devices with 30% of that total emanating from tablets. Contrary to a year ago, social-networking sites were barely mentioned as a major factor in leading to sales. - Apple dismisses maps exec in overhaul attempt
Apple is trying to rebound from criticism over its new mapping application. - Apple's Siri, Sprint system infiltrate new GM, Chrysler models
Smartphone applications will take center stage in General Motors' new Chevrolet Spark and Sonic small cars as well as Chrysler's 2013 Ram 1500 truck and SRT Viper, according to reports from the Los Angeles Auto Show this week. Chevrolet will introduce full functionality from Apple's Siri personal assistant in those two models. - Verizon sees M2M, cloud mobility among top 2013 corporate trends
Verizon Enterprise Solutions on Tuesday outlined its top five technology trends for 2013, including an increasing emphasis on machine-to-machine communications and cloud-based mobility. In acknowledging the cloud's rising importance, businesses must cope with major lifestyle changes that have narrowed the separation between the personal and professional lives of employees and clients, according to Verizon, which also asserts that companies need to invest in locking down a more secure mobile work environment. - Report: Apple rockets back to head of U.S. smartphone market
The iPhone has helped Apple climb to the top of the smartphone market in the U.S., according to a survey from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, the market research arm of the WPP advertising firm. Strong iPhone 5 sales gave Apple a 48.1% share of the U.S. market, compared with 46.7% for Google's Android platform in the third quarter. Kantar cited the loyalty of iPhone customers for its improved standing. "An impressive 92% of existing Apple owners in the U.S. said they will choose an iPhone the next time they upgrade," Kantar analyst Dominic Sunnebo said. Computerworld

- Android tablets threaten iPad's primacy in market
Apple's dominance in the tablet market is slowly slipping, according to a third-quarter ABI Research survey that showed the iPad's market share dropping to 55% compared with 69% in the second quarter and with Android holding a 44% share. - CTIA pushes for bill putting 5-year halt on new phone taxes
CTIA: The Wireless Association® will support carrier efforts next year to keep state and local governments from raising consumers' cellphone taxes for five years, according to a published report, which notes that states are badly in need of new revenues to close budget deficits. The industry is backing a measure that passed the Republican-controlled House in 2011, which calls for a five-year moratorium on new taxes. Investor's Business Daily
