- Hawaii confirms fourth case of necrotizing fasciitis
Hawaiian health officials say four cases of flesh-eating bacterial infections confirmed in the past two months are not related, though all occurred on the island of Kauai. The latest case involves a man who sustained a wound while hunting and might not have sought treatment promptly. State health officials are asking doctors and labs to report other possible cases. Canada-based Health Outcomes Worldwide is planning a $1.3 million expansion that will include development of smartphone applications of its how2track system, which accepts input from wound care providers and provides feedback to administrators on costs and preferred treatment. - Compliance with new MDS 3.0 rules begins April 1
The latest Resident Assessment Instrument manual, dated March 3, corrects mistakes in previous versions and has updated rules, including requirements for discharge planning, unplanned discharges, resident interviews and interview documentation. Skilled nursing facilities should ensure their staff have the latest manual and should allocate enough resources to ensure the transition to updated MDS 3.0 regulations goes smoothly, an industry expert says.
