Network Update
  • Facebook calls in an outside auditor for privacy-policy vote
Facebook is collecting user votes on a proposal to allow the site to make future privacy-policy changes without putting them to a vote, and has appointed an outside auditor to oversee the referendum. Still, it's unlikely the vote will make much difference, as under current rules, 300 million ballots will be required for the vote to be binding, Paul Sloan writes. Ideas in Action
  • PhoneDog settles suit over former employee's Twitter followers
PhoneDog has settled a lawsuit with former employee Noah Kravitz, whom the company had accused of absconding with 17,000 Twitter followers by repurposing a company Twitter account as his personal account. The settlement allows Kravitz to keep his account and his followers, and no financial aspect of the settlement was disclosed. Kravitz said the affair shows the importance of settling contractual details ahead of time so that companies and employees "can focus on doing good work together." • Go social to tackle childhood obesity, says AHA
Social media could be a powerful tool as health professionals attempt to tackle childhood obesity, the American Heart Association has declared. Studies show that many young people use social networks, and that messaging received via social channels can influence their real-world behavior. "Online communication and social media are an increasing part of our lives. ... Health-care providers should embrace its potential," Jennifer Li, chairwoman of the association's writing group, said in a statement. The Takeaway
  • Why bloggers need a cool head to cope with legal troubles
A legal threat can be terrifying to a blogger, but the key to resolving the issue quickly and tidily lies in staying calm and acting rationally, Lior Levin writes. It's a good idea to try to comply with cease-and-desist orders and other legal requests as quickly as possible, but then look to retain legal counsel to get the matter resolved in your favor. "[W]hen the other party sees that you're willing to put up a legal fight, the threat will often just evaporate (unless they're a large corporation) and you'll never need to worry about it again," Levin writes. • How to avoid creeping out your social media followers
There's a fine line between producing content that's relevant to your followers' interests and creating content that's so personalized that it creeps people out, Mateo Gutierrez writes. The key is to use social tools not just to target followers, but also to listen to what they're saying about the kinds of outreach they want to receive. "Brands have a long way to go to get better at understanding how to use social media as a listening device that shapes their campaigns," Gutierrez writes. • A top-shelf solution to a frightening situation
A man who was struck blind after drinking vodka that reacted with his diabetes medication had his eyesight restored by a few slugs of expensive whiskey. Figuring that the vodka had broken down into toxic methanol, doctors administered Johnnie Walker Black Label through a gastric tube. The whiskey's ethanol competed with the methanol already in the man's system, preventing it from doing further damage and allowing him to make a full recovery.
