- Real estate broker uses power plate equipment to stay fit
Lemoyne, Pa., real estate broker Bill Gladstone sets a wellness example for his employees with a routine that includes a workout on a treadmill-like power plate machine that vibrates to exercise his muscles while he stands on it. Gladstone's BStrong4Life routine, developed by a chiropractor, is 30 minutes per week but he's hoping his employees will do at least a 10-minute a week basic workout to improve their fitness. - Exercise may boost brain health, study shows
Researchers found that older adults who burned more calories had more gray matter in their brains, and suggested that people engage in fitness activities earlier, in their 40s and 50s, to get the maximum effect. American Academy of Neurology spokesman Dave Knopman said the study by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, shows a link between activity and brain health, but does not prove that activity preserves brain matter. - USPSTF advises hepatitis C screening for baby boomers
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force on Monday in a draft recommendation advised primary care physicians to consider hepatitis C screening for adults born between 1945 and 1965, and it said those with a history of IV drug use or blood transfusions prior to 1992 should be tested. The recommendations were an update to the group's 2004 statement and urge screening for all high-risk adults. Reuters

Data from the International Food Information Council Foundation's 2012 Food & Health Survey show that only 16% of parents reported having a very or an extremely healthful diet. Also, almost 70% are more concerned about the nutritional content of food and drinks they purchase for their children than about ones they get for themselves. - In-school chefs could help educate children on healthy eating
Having chefs in school cafeterias educate children about food preparation and nutrition would have a larger impact than simply changing the offerings in the cafeteria, chef Tia McDonald writes. "Just as children must learn reading, writing and math, a quality food education is necessary for the transition to successful, healthy adulthood. And just as those children must have quality teachers to help them succeed, they should also have chefs in schools to build their foundation in food," McDonald writes.
