- U.S. Supreme Court to hear case on genetically modified soybeans
A U.S. Supreme Court case could determine whether Monsanto and other seed producers can prevent farmers from replanting genetically altered crops. At issue is an Indiana farmer who bought progeny soybeans from a grain elevator for planting and was sued by Monsanto. A ruling against Monsanto "would devastate innovation in biotechnology," according to the company's brief. The Washington Post

- EU rapeseed imports to rise; sunflowerseed exports to dip
The EU is likely to import more rapeseed during the current marketing year, with ending inventories expected to be 30% lower than a year earlier, according to Oil World. Separately, the publication projects that sunflowerseed exports outside of the EU will decline in the second half of the market year compared with the previous six months and with the prior full year. - Study: Weekly eating of fried foods linked to prostate cancer risk
A questionnaire of men from two studies who have had prostate cancer suggests an increased risk of the disease among men who consume fried foods at least once a week, according to research published in The Prostate. "The fact that these study participants have cancer could affect the way they respond," said Brandon Pierce of the University of Chicago. "They could be more negative and say that their diet contributed to their diagnosis." Medill Reports (Northwestern University)

- Study: Mediterranean diet promotes happiness
People who adhere to a Mediterranean diet report happier feelings than those who eat a typical American diet, according to a study published in the Journal of Psychosomatic Research. In addition to enjoying the health benefits linked to eating a diet rich in olive oil, vegetables, fish and nuts, subjects also reported fewer negative emotions such as irritability, nervousness and fear, according to the study by Loma Linda University researchers. 2013 Chemical Entrepreneurship Series
The American Chemical Society and the University of California-San Diego's von Liebig Entrepreneurism Center have joined forces for a series of free webinars on entrepreneurship, featuring hosts Neil Senturia and Barbara Bry. The nine-part series begins Thursday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m. ET, with "Perspective on Entrepreneurship: The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of -- Part 1." It will continue through August on the third Thursday of each month. Preregistration is required.

App Challenge winners announced
The U.S. Department of Labor has announced the winners of its Worker Safety and Health App Challenge. Prizes totaling $30,000 are going to four entrants who submitted tools that best demonstrate for young workers the importance of recognizing and preventing workplace safety and health hazards and their right to a safe workplace. Among the awards is the People's Choice Award ($3,000), which went to Sidharth Garg for his Ergonomics iOS App that offers ergonomic equipment setup advice in an office setting to prevent musculoskeletal injuries. The app offers workplace-specific stretching exercises and programmable reminders to help time breaks.
