FMI Connect -- The Global Food Retail Experience
In a few weeks, executives, managers, wholesalers and other members of the food retail industry will gather in Chicago for FMI Connect. From June 10 to 13, McCormick Place will be home to education sessions from industry experts, workshops, an exhibit hall with 900 exhibitors and much more.

At this new annual show, sessions will cover everything from fresh foods, supply chain and the latest trends in merchandising and foodservice to cybercrime, today's multigenerational workforce and participating in politics. Mattson, the country's largest independent developer of new foods and beverages, will challenge retailers to rethink what they should be delivering to the customer, and culinary experts will create delicious dishes using grocery items during the Supermarket Chef Showdown. Be sure to check out the full schedule of events, and stay up to date during the show with SmartBrief's coverage in FMI dailyLead and on SmartBlog on Food & Beverage. You can also follow FMI on Twitter throughout the show, and don't forget to download the FMI Connect application in the app store.
A Look Ahead
  • New annual FMI Connect show will focus on 3 major themes
FMI Connect will bring a fresh, innovative lineup of exhibitors and programs to professionals in the food retail industry. The conference will focus on three major themes: consumer insights, the overall retail landscape and the future of food retail, according to FMI CEO and President Leslie G. Sarasin, who also noted that FMI will hold the conference annually to respond to rapid changes in the food retailing industry. "Our registration numbers are very strong," she said. "... It's going to be a very impressive floor at the show." Supermarket News (free registration) (5/19) Email this Story

Consumer Insights
  • Natural, organic foods fuel growth for Kroger
Kroger has responded to increased consumer demand for natural and organic products by developing the private-label Simple Truth line and expanding its natural and organic selection. The company has seen double-digit growth in natural food sales over the past three years and 41 straight quarters of same-store sales growth. "I think a lot of the sales are otherwise loyal Kroger shoppers who have become more aware of our offering in natural organics and are buying more of that product from us rather than making a second shopping trip," said Mike Schlotman, senior vice president and finance chief. • Survey: More shoppers are buying private-label products
Nearly 90% of shoppers buy store-brand products, saying their quality is at least the same as their name-brand counterparts, according to a new survey from Deloitte. Consumers still purchase brand-name products in the beer, soft drinks, pet food and coffee categories, but they don't really consider brands when purchasing bottled water, tabletop disposable paper products, food storage, deli meats, condiments and salty snacks, the survey revealed. The Food Retail Landscape
  • Retailers to examine crossroads between food, nutrition at FMI Connect
Retailers are dedicating more resources to improving health and nutrition offerings, as 85% of companies employ corporate dietitians, 30% employ in-store dietitians and 25% employ regional dietitians, according to a 2013 FMI survey. A Health & Wellness Retail Zone at the FMI Connect show next month will feature health screenings and applications to engage retailers and help them identify ways to improve or expand their wellness initiatives, writes Natalie Menza, Wakefern Food's health and wellness manager and the FMI Health and Wellness Council chair. • How SEO has helped boost Tesco in online grocery
Search engine optimization has helped Tesco grow to occupy 50% of the U.K. online grocery market, and among 2,500 online search terms, Tesco is the most visible supermarket by a significant margin, according to data from Pi Datametrics. Tesco's competitors, which include ASDA, Waitrose and Sainsbury's, have made strides in the past year to boost their SEO, but their average positions, while visible in a search, are poor and correspond to a small number of search terms, Intelligent Positioning Director Sam Silverwood-Cope writes. • How Campbell's CEO changed the corporate culture
Denise Morrison had a strategy for changing the corporate culture when she became CEO of Campbell Soup in 2011, and she started her plan at the top and let it trickle down. Morrison turned the focus to consumers, made employees accountable while encouraging them to be creative and unafraid of failure, and allowed decision-makers to streamline the process to meet consumer needs faster. "You need to set a tone at the top that inspires trust -- and encourages open and honest, two-way communication," Morrison said. Forbes (4/25) Email this Story
  • Iowa's independent grocers keep the blood flowing in rural communities
Independent grocers serve as community centers and economic drivers in some of Iowa's rural towns, according to the Iowa Grocery Industry Association, and a decline of such grocers in the state from 1,400 to 700 between 1995 and 2005 seems to be leveling off. The keys to success for these small grocers are diverse service and product offerings, community involvement and unique business components that draw customers from outside the immediate market, said Tom Mulholland, fourth-generation owner of Mulholland's in Malvern, Iowa.
