  • Scientifically informed food-risk regulation is critical, expert says
Rational research, thought and regulation are essential to managing and mitigating food risk, but regulators have not always demonstrated this, particularly with genetically modified crops, said Anne Glover, the European Commission's chief scientific adviser. "The evidence is the same for each [European] member state, but each member state votes differently," she said. FoodNavigator (11/8) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Chemistry falling from its perch as a secure job field
Employment prospects for chemists, particularly unemployed older people in the U.S., have dimmed in recent years. Employment surveys by the American Chemical Society show a 4.2% unemployment rate among members, up more than 2 percentage points from 2008. Under-reporting is an issue, too. "Many may have a job, which keeps them from collecting unemployment, but they're not working either in their field or in a position that comes anywhere close to matching their previous income," said consultant Lee H. Latimer. Chemical & Engineering News (11/5), Chemical & Engineering News (11/5) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Learn to innovate like a Nobel laureate
Francis Crick, the Nobel laureate who helped discover DNA, accomplished great things because he was willing to be proven wrong time and time again, says fellow laureate Paul Berg. "I won a case of wine from him on a bet because he was wrong and I was right," Berg recalls. Crick "had 10 ideas for every one" that succeeded, but his persistence and imagination paid off in the end, Berg says. The Wall Street Journal (11/2) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Here’s to Vitamin D Day
We missed Vitamin D Day, which was observed on Nov. 2 in the U.S. We don't, however, miss our daily vitamin D3 supplementation, in part because of the education undertaken by the Vitamin D Council. In honor of Vitamin D Day, the executive director of the Council, Dr. John Cannell, released a three-minute video discussing the importance of moderate sun exposure and vitamin D supplementation. In it, Cannell says that supplementation is the "single most important thing you can do to take care of and improve your overall health," particularly as sunlight wanes in the northern hemisphere. His rule of thumb: If your shadow is shorter than you are, you are manufacturing sufficient quantities (assuming you bare enough skin to the sun); if it is more than twice as long as you are, you are not making much at all and require supplementation. • More reaction to the French GMO corn study
Reaction continues to pour in concerning the research published in Elsevier’s Food and Chemical Toxicity journal on the safety of genetically modified food. The study, which was led by French researcher Gilles-Eric Séralini of the University of Caen, found that rats fed a diet containing a variety of Monsanto Co.'s GM corn developed cancer and died earlier than rats fed a standard diet. The European Food Safety Authority dismissed the study in October 2012, citing substandard experimental design and statistical methodology. EFSA will publish a final review in mid-November. In the meantime, on Nov. 7, Elsevier posted 16 comments and letters to the editor critical of the study. LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
