Verdict roils Android device-makers, possibly Google: Apple's victory over Samsung Electronics means that products that license the technology could carry a higher price tag as hardware-makers and carriers pass on their royalty costs to consumers. Industry observers said the verdict would solidify Apple's power in an industry where carriers are already chafing at the high subsidies they absorb from discounting Apple products to consumers. Analysts debated how the verdict would affect Android's future. "I am sure this is going to put a damper on Android's growth," said ISI Group analyst Brian Marshall. Google said the verdict would not affect most "core" Android elements. The Wall Street Journal

Apple's patent win may open door for Microsoft, Nokia: Smartphone and tablet manufacturers might take a second look at Microsoft's Windows wireless platform in the aftermath of Apple's decisive legal victory over Android-driven Samsung Electronics, analysts said. Developers had mixed reactions, saying the verdict could spur innovation but also presented product designers with a "minefield" of risks that they would be accused of copying other product designs. - Samsung asks judge to reverse U.S. sales ban on Galaxy Tab 10.1
Samsung Electronics did manage to eke out a legal victory in its patent trial with Apple last week: The jury cleared Samsung of copying the iPad's design elements, a verdict that contradicts U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh's decision two months ago concerning Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 in which she banned sales of the tablet in the U.S. Samsung on Sunday asked Koh to rescind her order. Separately, a report by IHS iSuppli says Samsung makes a higher profit on its Galaxy Note than Apple does on the iPad because of its lower cost of materials. Reuters

- Verizon prepares for Tampa, Fla.
Verizon Wireless isn't just sitting on its hands awaiting the imminent arrival in Tampa, Fla., of Tropical Storm Isaac -- which could escalate to Hurricane Isaac -- along with the huge demands on its network from the Republican National Convention. The carrier has been preparing for the GOP gathering by having hundreds of network specialists make sure its 3G and 4G networks are in top shape in the carrier's "super-switch" processing center. Verizon says it has also installed new distributed antenna systems -- wired antenna networks that connect to base stations on site to ensure a strong signal for conventioneers. Network World

- Report: Few use more than 2GB on their data plans
A NPD Group survey of 1,000 Android users has found that few exceed their limit of 2 gigabytes of data a month, with most users falling "well under" that limit. - By the numbers: The U.S. wireless industry's economic impact
The U.S. wireless industry is the engine of U.S. economic growth, according to a report by Recon Analytics analyst and founder Roger Entner. In the report, Entner found that the U.S. wireless industry directly or indirectly supports 3.8 million jobs, or 2.6% of all U.S. employment; contributes $195.5 billion to the U.S. GDP; and drove $33 billion in productivity improvements in 2011. If an additional 500 MHz of spectrum is made available, per the National Broadband Plan, the U.S. economy and Americans would benefit from the additional 350,000 new jobs, $166 billion added to U.S. GDP and $36.7 billion in government revenue. Learn more about the wireless industry's impact on the U.S. economy, and read Entner's report.
