  • Poll examines physicians' view on obesity treatments
    A survey by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health revealed only 44% of responding physicians reported feeling successful in helping obese patients lose weight, with a majority stating that nutritionists and dietitians were better suited for the job. "In order to begin improving obesity care, medical education should focus on enhancing those obesity-related skills primary care physicians feel most qualified to deliver, as well as changing the composition of health care teams and practice resources," said study lead author Sara Bleich.   • ACOG: Obese women can safely gain less weight during pregnancy
    Gaining less weight than recommended during singleton pregnancy does not pose adverse effects in obese women, provided that the baby is growing as it should, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists stated. The group also urged obese pregnant patients to continue with nutritional counseling and exercise and to undergo height and weight assessment during pregnancy.   • Probiotic supplements lower risk of infant eczema, review finds
    U.S. researchers reviewed 21 studies and found that taking probiotic supplements reduced babies' risk of developing eczema. Some studies showed that at-risk children who were provided with Lactobacillus rhapsodic GG or Lactobacillus rhamnosus strain HN001 had a 50% lower risk of having the skin condition compared with the placebo group.     Some pharmacies fill numerous prescriptions for painkillers and other addictive medicines without ever questioning whether the recipient is addicted or has a legitimate medical use for the drug, according to California records and authorities. Pharmacists are required to refuse to fill prescriptions if they believe a person has no medical need for a drug. The California Board of Pharmacy has 37 investigators responsible for overseeing 42,000 pharmacists, and questionable drug dispensing remains a low law enforcement priority.
