  • NATO to maintain presence in Afghanistan after 2014
    NATO plans to remove all combat troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014 but will keep military units in the region to aid U.S. troops in training and advising the Afghan National Security Forces, a NATO spokesman said Monday. Gen. John Allen, the head of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, is expected to submit a plan to the White House for U.S. troop presence in the region beyond 2014.   • N.C. man urges vet status for WWII merchant marines
    A North Carolina man, Don Horton, is looking to get veteran status for the roughly 30,000 U.S. merchant marines who helped pull barges during World War II. In 1988, Congress mandated that the Defense Department grant former merchant marine members full veteran status, but individuals who did not receive discharge papers from the Coast Guard have been unable to attain the designation.   • Manufacturers give $6M to set up training program for veterans
    Manufacturers including General Electric and Alcoa are partnering with community and technical colleges in 10 cities to establish a training program for veterans looking to obtain certifications in electronics, machining and other areas. The manufacturers have contributed $6 million so far for the program, which organizers say will help 15,000 veterans qualify for manufacturing careers.
