- Plastic surgeons report continued uptick in number of male clients
The number of men seeking plastic surgery has risen over the past few years, plastic surgeons say. As the economy recovered, more men began seeking cosmetic procedures in an effort to get or retain jobs, plastic surgeon Adam Weinfeld says. Cosmetic surgery can help address areas that diet and exercise alone won't affect, says plastic surgeon Sanjay Sharma. Weinfeld adds that technological advances have helped foster techniques that reduce swelling and bruising. KXAN-TV (Austin, Texas)

- Study determines risk factors for post-surgery morbidity, mortality
An analysis of more than 240,000 cases in a national database determined seven independent preoperative risk factors that increase morbidity and mortality risk following ambulatory surgery. The factors were disseminated cancer, paraplegia or quadriplegia, age 70 or older, steroid use, kidney failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and history of transient ischemic attack or stroke. Surgical site infection and intraoperative blood transfusion were among the most common complications. The findings may help improve preoperative patient screening in outpatient surgical facilities, a researcher said. Anesthesiology News (free registration)

- Researchers work on gesture interface for the OR
Researchers at Purdue University have developed a system that tracks a surgeon's movements in the operating room to allow touch-free navigation of radiologic images. The system uses Microsoft's Kinect 3D camera and takes the position of the surgeon's head and torso into account to avoid mistaking surgical motions for commands to the viewing system. MedGadget.com
