  • No dentists serve Medicaid patients in 27 Kan. counties
    Kansas' Medicaid program now covers dental care for adults and children, but 27 counties in the state have no approved dentist and providers in 10 others offer only fluoride treatments, according to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. The state is considering licensing specially trained dental hygienists to fill cavities and offer other routine services as part of efforts to alleviate the shortage.   • Study finds link between oral cancer and periodontitis
    Periodontitis, missing teeth and alveolar bone loss were associated with a higher likelihood of having oral squamous cell carcinoma in a study of 620 patients. Dental caries, however, was not associated with a higher risk of oral cancer. The research was presented at a meeting of the International Association for Dental Research.
