  • NYC-area golfers help residents recover from Hurricane Sandy
New England residents are still reeling from the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, and while golf course reconstruction has been put on the back burner as residents recover, golfers are donating their time and energy to help out. "I'll have plenty of time for golf later. I'm a life-long New Yorker, and right now, my city needs to recover. I have to do what I can to help," said Chuck Cordova, who helped clean up areas in Breezy Point, N.Y., where dozens of homes burned to the ground. • Palm Beach County country clubs hire more local workers
The number of imported foreign workers hired by Palm Beach County country clubs and resorts has dropped significantly over the past two years, according to a report by the Workforce Alliance. The clubs and resorts have applied for 31% fewer work visas and instead are actively trying to decrease the area's high unemployment by hiring locals. The Palm Beach Post (Fla.) • U.S. minority population will surpass majority by 2043
The number of minorities in America will outpace the number of whites by 2043, mostly due to minority groups having consistently higher birth rates, according to the Census Bureau. “The fast-growing demographic today is now the children of immigrants,” says Marcelo Suarez-Orozco of UCLA’s Graduate School of Education & Information Studies. “Moving forward, the U.S. will become the first major post-industrial society in the world where minorities will be the majority." • Jack Nicklaus, recreation group start children's golf leagues
The National Parks and Recreation Association is joining forces with Jack Nicklaus in a new initiative designed to introduce children to the game of golf. The Jack Nicklaus Learning Leagues will offer golf as a team sport to children ages 5 to 12. “There are so many sports -- team sports -- played in the park system today,” Nicklaus says. “If golf is not part of the sports introduced and available to them at their local park and recreation facilities, they will play other sports and not golf. So we need to get golf in their local parks and have them play our sport, and I think the team concept is the way to do it." ClubAndResortBusiness.com (12/17) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Employee policy changes to make for 2013
Human resources experts say increased scrutiny of employers makes it imperative that managers update their employment policies regarding social media, at-will employment, same-sex marriage and more. Legal changes that take affect in 2013 make it "important that employers take a comprehensive look at what policies need to be revised or added," says attorney Andrew Singer.
