Premature babies with hyperglycemia who received intensive glucose control therapy exhibited slower linear growth and had higher hypoglycemia risk than preemies who had standard treatment, researchers reported in the journal Pediatrics. Greater overall weight gain and head circumference were observed in infants who had intensive treatments, but the difference disappeared by the equivalent of 36 weeks gestational age, and survival was not improved. - Sleep apnea surgical patients may not need ICU, study says
Patients who have had surgery for obstructive sleep apnea need close monitoring but may not require ICU care, according to a study from the Pacific Sleep Centre in Singapore. LewisGale Medical Center in Salem, Va., has begun a community petition drive to convince the state to approve its application for an eight-bed NICU, which originally was denied because it would duplicate existing services.
