- Cash-strapped police departments turn to electric vehicles
Rising gasoline prices present an opportunity for police departments to consider electric vehicles in a bid to reduce their operating costs, experts say. Electric motorcycles and Segway vehicles are seen as good options for urban patrols. "Agencies are seeing consistent positive interactions with the public when the public learns their police are using zero-gas-emission technologies," says Jeff Simpson of electric-bike manufacturer Vectrix. - CSR alone won't boost banks' reputations, says Goldman alum
Token CSR initiatives won't be enough to turn the financial sector's reputation around, says Lucas van Praag, who ran global corporate communications at Goldman Sachs for more than a decade. - FedEx Weighs Natural Gas Benefits
FedEx has a vehicle strategy it calls the "reduce, replace and revolutionize" program. In other words, the company tries to reduce the number of miles its fleet drives and the number of its vehicles on the road, replace outdated vehicles, and embrace the newest technologies. Currently, FedEx Corp. is testing two new tractors powered by liquefied natural gas-only engines to see if they will meet the company's needs. "From an industry security standpoint, we need to diversify much as we have in the power generation sector," said Mitch Jackson, VP of environmental affairs and sustainability. 3BL Media

- IEA: Renewables are "indispensable part" of world's energy mix
Renewable energy will grow to challenge coal as the biggest generator of power worldwide by 2035, thanks to declining technology costs, rising fossil fuel prices and increased government support, according to the International Energy Agency. Wind, solar and hydro power are projected to become the second-largest generator of electricity in 2015, and would account for nearly one-third of all generation in 2035, the IEA said. "A steady increase in hydropower and the rapid expansion of wind and solar power has cemented the position of renewables as an indispensable part of the global energy mix," the IEA said. Bloomberg
