  Business Update
  • Cleaning-product sales are projected to rise steadily through 2016
Sales of household and personal care products will increase 3.4% each year through 2016, according to IHS Chemical. Competition in emerging markets continues to be intense, and companies say they need to innovate -- not just reformulate -- their products to meet consumer demands. "Consumers are more discerning, and they're looking for meaningful innovation," said Ian Cook, Colgate-Palmolive's CEO, chairman and president. • ACI's Rosenberg discusses challenges of TSCA reform
Toxic Substances Control Act reform remains a U.S. industry priority, even though it may take years to achieve a law. "My members are still committed to getting TSCA amended in a way to have a credible federal program," said Ernie Rosenberg, president and CEO of the American Cleaning Institute. Any such bill should protect the ability of cleaning manufacturers to innovate, he said. Representatives from other countries' industry groups also addressed regulatory issues at the annual ACI convention. HAPPI online (1/30), HAPPI online (1/30) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Lower-priced products hurt surfactant volume
Consumers have gone for cheaper products over the past few years, and "we have not seen evidence" that they are returning to more expensive detergents, said Eric Stouder of Sasol Olefins & Surfactants. Such pricing preferences "lead to detergents consumed with somewhat lower levels of surfactant, so that impacts our volume," Stouder said. • ACI: Sustainability can be a driver of industry innovation
American Cleaning Institute President and CEO Ernie Rosenberg says the organization is focused on sustainability, public safety and a healthy environment for innovation. "We see sustainability ... at the core of where industry is going -- not something you have to do," he says. "We are also putting together a cleaning product ingredient database, which will be of value not only to customers but to industry as well. It gives the public much more ability to pick products that are more sustainable, more price competitive, and more effective as well." • The dizzying world of cleaning-product eco-labels
Eco-labels are popular with consumers and awarded by myriad organizations, but manufacturers point out that they can be too narrow in focus and confusing to consumers. "It is a fact that anything can be safe or unsafe -- it all depends on the amount," said Brian Sansoni, ACI's vice president of communication. "Manufacturers work to ensure that they use levels of ingredients that are 'just right' -- in that they provide a benefit in the products but at the same time are safe."
