- Ohio city council moves to make public transportation safer
A member of the Cleveland City Council introduced a measure that would increase safety for Regional Transit Authority workers. The measure would increase the penalty for those involved in fighting, painting graffiti, playing loud music or other abusive behavior. - Computer program provides risk assessments for parole
A computer model aims to help calculate the risk that an individual will commit a crime based on information such as their successful completion of parole and their potential for violence. The Philadelphia Department of Probation and Parole uses the forecasts, and work that is under way could assist judges with sentencing decisions, said Richard Berk of the University of Pennsylvania, who wrote the program's code. - Anger grows at Calif. college's accreditation-saving plan
Faculty, staff and students at City College of San Francisco are planning protests and airing their disagreements with lawmakers over the college administration's efforts to overhaul the school in a bid to save its accreditation. Opponents say the administration plan will be too expensive, destroy the school's culture and lead to greater faculty turnover because of cuts to pay and benefits.
