  • ACI focuses on expanding ingredient inventory, publishing data
The ACI's Cleaning Product Ingredient Safety Initiative is focusing in 2013 on pinpointing and publishing an online, accessible hazard data set for each of the ingredients in the Ingredient Inventory. "[W]e believe we can tread a path that makes good business sense in satisfying regulators' questions in advance of their asking them, thereby avoiding unnecessary regulations which come with additional compliance costs and often other unintended negative consequences," writes Paul DeLeo, ACI's senior director of environmental safety. • P&G acts to recharge its innovation
Procter & Gamble has formed a development team that includes its research-and-development leaders, marketers, industrial designers and other stakeholders. Among upcoming products is Cascade Platinum, a dishwashing detergent that cleans the machine and dishes. "Innovation is at the heart of everything we do at P&G. It differentiates our brands, prevents commoditization of categories and brands and wins the consumer-value equation," said Bruce Brown, chief technology officer. • For cleaning products, scent matters
Cleaning-product manufacturers say there is demand for appealing scents, as well as products with seasonal scents. While olfactory preferences have expanded in recent years, some scents just don't translate well to the cleaning product industry. "Consumers equate household products with lighter scents and therefore heavier robust edible ingredients have not been as apparent in this category," said fragrance expert Sue Phillips. "It goes back to consumers wanting lighter scents to reflect cleanliness and freshness." HAPPI magazine (1/2013) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Dow Chemical urges addition of "recover" to life-cycle mentality
The packaging industry should expand its "reduce, reuse, recycle" philosophy to include "recover" as a way of reflecting comprehensive efforts for post-consumer materials, according to Dow Chemical. "The key is understanding how energy recovery works as a system because mechanical recycling and energy recovery can work together. We have the potential to recycle and recovery energy from a large amount of material," said Jeff Wooster, the company's global sustainability leader for plastics.
