Setting the Example
  • Developing sustainable concrete structures for the future
This article discusses the sustainable aspect of using concrete in building structures, including various materials now being used to create "greener" cements. "Concrete is a sustainable building material, which ensures durable and long-lasting structures that will not rust and burn," said Huiqing He, Unibeton Ready Mix's deputy operations director in the United Arab Emirates. "It also ensures longevity -- an integral part of reducing cost and use of resources in a project." Zawya.com (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) (10/29) LinkedInFacebookTwitterGoogle+Email this Story
  • Levi's turns plastic bottles into a fashion statement
Levi's is launching a new line of jeans featuring denim made from recycled plastic. At least 20% of the fabric in each item of apparel will be made out of used bottles and food trays, with each pair of jeans expected to use eight bottles. Creating Accountability
  • Sustainable cities cannot ignore their use of global resources
The ideal sustainable city must account for the worldwide movement of products and services, according to researchers based in Sweden. "Urban areas drive much of the global changes we see, whether in energy use, food supply, resource depletion or land-use change," said Sybil Seitzinger of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program. "The sustainability of a city can no longer be thought of in isolation from the combined resource use and impacts of cities globally," the researchers wrote. Green Marketing
  • Unilever asks families to join sustainable-living experiment
A dozen British families have agreed to participate in what Unilever is calling a "social experiment" to demonstrate that green living doesn't have to be expensive. The families will take a series of monthly eco-challenges that Unilever hopes will reduce their food bills by 15% and cut household waste by 25%. Sustainability Update Powered by 3BL Media

  • A thirsty planet: As water grows scarce, Americans embrace water recycling and support businesses that do too
The U.S. federal government estimates that 36 U.S. states will face water shortages next year. By 2025, two-thirds of the world's population, or 5.3 billion people, may experience lack of water. But there is some good news. A new GE water survey found that people in the U.S. strongly support wastewater reuse to fight water scarcity. The poll found that 84% of Americans thought that water-resource protection should be a national priority and that 57% of Americans would prefer to do business with a company that "prioritized" water reuse. 3BL Media

The Responsible Leader
  • How CSR leadership is evolving
As sustainability becomes embedded in companies' strategic thinking, bosses are finding new paradigms for leading CSR efforts, write Matt Littlefield and Mike Roberts. "Leaders no longer manage sustainability in a reactive and local manner. Rather ... it's managed proactively and globally as part of larger operational excellence initiatives," they write. • Vestas to shut down 3 R&D facilities in U.S. by mid-2013
Vestas Wind Systems is planning to close its research and development facilities in Louisville, Colo., Houston and Marlborough, Mass., by the middle of next year, instead of consolidating operations in Brighton, Colo., as initially planned. Vestas "has decided to further simplify its global [R&D] footprint to reduce operational costs. Therefore, Vestas will close its three R&D offices in the United States by the end of the second quarter in 2013," the company said in a statement. The closures will eliminate 85 jobs. Engage. Innovate. Discuss.
  • Why U.S. Cellular views its customers as neighbors
U.S. Cellular takes its social media cues from its "renegade social media guru," Sharif Renno, whose social media outreach helped drive a 22% increase in sales in the Milwaukee market, Andy Sernovitz writes. To replicate that success on a national scale, social media manager Jessica Masterson trains employees to use social media in a human, relatable way, and to seek local connections with customers.
