- Meningitis cases in U.S. reach 91
The total number of reported fungal meningitis cases has reached 91, including seven deaths, CDC officials reported Sunday. Nine states have been affected. Federal and state officials are investigating New England Compounding Center's facility in Framingham, Mass., which made the spinal steroid injections linked to the outbreak. The company has recalled all products made at the facility, and last week federal officials advised against using NECC-manufactured products. Reuters

The rate of CT scan use among children sent to emergency departments due to abdominal pain rose from less than 1% to more than 15% between 1998 and 2008, a study in Pediatrics revealed. - Race affects diabetes complication risks among underinsured
An analysis of data on underinsured people in Louisiana found that black patients with diabetes were more likely than whites to develop end-stage renal disease. Whites had higher risks of heart failure, stroke and coronary heart disease compared with blacks. The results were published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. - Study links coffee to higher glaucoma risk
Drinking three or more cups of coffee a day may raise a person's risk of developing exfoliation glaucoma by 66%, according to an analysis of data from the Nurses' Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. - Prenatal BPA exposure tied to lower thyroid levels
Greater exposure to bisphenol A during pregnancy was linked to reduced levels of thyroid hormone in both mothers and male infants, a U.S. study in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives found. Researchers were uncertain why high BPA exposure affects boys and not girls, but said it is possible that boys are less capable of detoxifying the chemical than girls. HealthDay News
