Companies should set policies to guide such advocacy, but ultimately employees have to take the lead. "Your employees believe in the same vision you do, and that is why they are your best brand ambassadors," he writes. • AHIP: Hospital prices drive up health care costs
A recent study by AHIP, published in the American Journal of Managed Care, shows how increases in the prices of inpatient hospital care services are contributing to the rising health costs. Inpatient hospital care prices rose 8.2% annually from 2008 to 2010, with the highest increases in New York, Texas and Tennessee, at 10.5%, 9.3% and 8.8%, respectively. "To make health care coverage more affordable for consumers and employers, there needs to be a much greater focus on the underlying cost of medical care," said AHIP President and CEO Karen Ignagni. • More states may follow Ark. lead on Medicaid
An Arkansas plan to move 250,000 Medicaid-eligible residents into private plans through a government health insurance exchange would not significantly increase federal costs, according to a state analysis. The federal government could even save $700 million on tax subsidies in the state, the report said. Other states that may follow a similar path are Florida, Maine, Louisiana and Ohio.
