- Portland, Ore., and Seattle schools to use new propane autogas buses
First Student, North America's biggest student transportation provider, recently acquired 134 propane autogas school buses for use at Seattle Public Schools in Washington and Portland Public Schools in Oregon. The Propane Education & Research Council helped fund the development of the buses' fuel system. "Portland and Seattle have chosen a fuel that is powerful, sustainable and domestic, so these cities will enjoy cleaner air and quieter streets, all while using an abundant American fuel," said PERC's chief business development officer, Tucker Perkins. - Ga. retailer taps into local pipeline for propane
Modern Gas' proximity to Dixie Pipeline's transmission line in Albany, Ga., has given it a unique advantage over its competitors over the years. "We probably have the shortest propane delivery system in the country. Dixie has told us we're one of the few propane marketers with a tap directly into their pipeline. So we don't have the transportation costs others do," said company CEO Dan Holloway. LPGasMagazine.com

- Survey reveals drop in interest in getting LEED certification
A survey by Turner Construction Co. found that fewer companies are interested in pursuing LEED certification, Rob Cassidy writes. Only 48% of respondents indicated they were "very likely" to seek LEED certification for new construction projects or renovations, compared to the 61% who responded that way in Turner's 2008 survey. The reasons some respondents gave about why their firms would not seek LEED certifications were the cost of obtaining the certification, the amount of staff time taken up, the "time required for the process" and the "difficulty of the process." - Deaton: Industry needs to reach out to public about fracking
The oil and natural gas industry should engage government and the public more about the advantages of hydraulic fracturing and other drilling technologies so resources can be exploited more, said Chad Deaton, executive chairman of Baker Hughes. "We have to let the government and the public know we are good citizens, we are protectors of the environment and we do create jobs," Deaton said during Deloitte's oil and gas conference in Houston. - Most industry professionals see U.S. as natural gas self-sufficient
The U.S. is already self-sufficient in terms of natural gas or will be within a decade, the majority of oil industry professionals said in a Deloitte survey. However, most respondents also believe the country will never achieve oil independence. "When you combine unconventional oil supplies with the recently established increase in shale gas reserves, you could have the makings of a true energy renaissance," said Peter Robertson, an independent adviser to Deloitte and former vice chairman of Chevron. A hardware store in South Bend, Ind., is selling multi-function alarms that detect carbon monoxide and other explosive gases in the home. "If you're sleeping or you've been away for a while and you walk up to the house and hear the alarm going off, you know better than to stick the key in the door because there's a gas leak, so they're pretty important," said Dave Parmelee of Kabelin Ace Hardware.
