  • Furlough days lead to longer winter breaks in Calif.
Some California districts have issued furlough days for teachers, meaning that winter breaks have been lengthened in some districts. In one district, winter vacation has been extended from two weeks to three weeks, with a similar plan in place for spring break. It's a similar story in other districts, where a lack of funds have caused an extension of school breaks. In Rialto, Calif., officials said they lengthened the break after logging a decline in student attendance. San Jose Mercury News (Calif.) • Common core testing brings technology guidelines
The Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, one of two consortia designing curricula and assessments for Common Core State Standards, released on Friday its "minimum specifications" and "recommended" technology guidelines for testing under common core. The guidelines address such areas as acceptable screen sizes and devices permissible for the testing, plus the types of security needed regarding Internet access, cameras and other device features. The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium earlier this month released its own list of technology requirements and recommendations. Professional development is called "professional learning" in the Lexington, Ky., public-school system, says superintendent Paul Ash, who credits its ongoing program with improving student test scores. The program offers a mix of seminars, workshops and classes with continuous development opportunities such as teacher collaboration teams, coaches and peer mentors. "The evidence is overwhelming -- professional learning turns a good school system into a great one," Ash said. Wicked Local/Lexington, Ky. (12/19) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • At what age should children enroll in kindergarten?
The cutoff date for children in Tennessee to enroll in kindergarten has been moved back. Under the change approved by state legislation, in the 2014-15 school year, children must be 5 years old by Aug. 15 to enroll -- earlier than the current cutoff of Aug. 31. The previous deadline was Sept. 30. The move is part of a trend emerging nationwide in which districts -- and parents -- are in favor of giving students more time to mature before enrolling in kindergarten.
