Cesarean birth, formula tied to differences in gut microbiota
Formula-fed babies had more species of bacteria in their stool samples than breast-fed babies, with over-representation of Clostridium difficile, according to a study published in the journal CMAJ. More U.S. mothers are breast-feeding, CDC says
The number of babies who were breast-fed increased from 70.3% in 2000 to 74.6% in 2008, CDC researchers wrote in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends continued breast-feeding between 6 months to 12 months of age in combination with solid foods, and the report showed that the rate of breast-feeding after six months increased from 34.5% to 44.4% during the study period. $2M available for study of link between microbiome, early labor
The NIH's National Institute of Nursing Research has set aside $2 million for research into links between preterm labor and microbiomes. Multidiscipline projects will use genomic tools to evaluate microbiomes in the body during pregnancy and look for markers that could be used to help prevent neonatal death and complications. Study: Autism risk may fall with prenatal intake of folic acid
Taking folic acid supplements before conception and early in pregnancy was associated with a lower risk of having children with autism, according to a Norwegian study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The effects of folic acid on genes and DNA repair may explain its role in brain development disorders in babies, including autism, researchers said. Reuters (2/12)

Prenatal intake of omega-3s may not boost brain development
Data from 11 clinical trials on the effect of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation during pregnancy on a child's brain development showed that such supplements had neither a positive nor negative effect on visual or neurological capacity. Since a majority of the trials had very few participants, excluded difficult pregnancies and failed to monitor the children long enough, Australian researchers said that more research is needed. The study was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Reuters (2/8)
