  • Google to pay $7 million to end privacy investigation
Google reportedly will pay $7 million to settle federal claims that its Street View imaging program collected personal data such as passwords, e-mails and other information gained through Wi-Fi. The data was gathered as Google Street View vehicles drove through neighborhoods between 2007 and 2010. "We work hard to get privacy right at Google. But in this case we didn't, which is why we quickly tightened up our systems to address the issue," Google's Nadia Blagojevic said in a statement. eWeek (3/11) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Esri leverages unique space at SXSW for mapping gurus
This year's South by Southwest Interactive Festival is as much about interactive media and technology as it is about music. Software firm Esri commandeered a unique venue in Austin, Texas, to connect developers, hackers, entrepreneurs and executives with its geographic information systems mapping solutions. "GIS has been used for a long time in natural resources and government ... But commercial companies are starting to use it more and more, for things like: Where's the best place to locate a store? What are the trends in demographics so that we can project where we need to be building and buying land? Even things like, 'Where should we open flu-shot clinics?'" explains Esri Chief Marketing Officer Linda Hecht. SmartBrief/SmartBlog on Leadership (3/8) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Education is key to growing location-related professions
Location is central to critical thinking and learning about the world around us, said Mindy Brown, president of Bruun Consulting. Location studies teach people to think in three dimensions, but fragmentation in the location sectors makes it difficult for people to deeply grasp its importance. "How we educate pre-college and college students in location thinking skills is critical to growing the industry opportunities," Brown said. • Putting a (woman's) face on the location industry
Women are naturals for the location industry, as "location-based thinking, applications, and technologies are so naturally aligned with the way women think and view the world," but they remain in the minority in the field, Natasha Léger writes. To highlight the benefits to the female gender, Léger has profiled 18 women in the industry who are making advances in areas like location-based services and mobility, 3D Big Data management and mobile marketing.
