- Why one-size-fits-all professional development does not work
It is time to change the way schools approach professional development, elementary-school principal Peter DeWitt writes in this blog post. DeWitt cites author Jim Knight, who supports a collaborative, partner-driven approach that includes involvement from all stakeholders and the empowerment of teachers, who have a choice in what they are learning. - Lawmaker says technology could help small S.D. districts
South Dakota state Sen. Mark Johnston, R-Sioux Falls, has proposed allowing small, rural districts to enter into "joint powers" agreements in an effort to avoid consolidation with other districts. Such agreements would allow districts to use Web-based classes to offer the same curriculum as other, larger districts. "Size and quality are no longer related," said Dan Guericke, director of the Mid-Central Education Cooperative in Platte. "Where the teachers are located is irrelevant with the use of technology." - Kan. education board adopts policies on seclusion, restraint
New regulations regarding the use in Kansas schools of "restraint and seclusion" of students with severe behavioral disorders were adopted by the state board of education on Wednesday. Board members voted 9-1 to approve the regulations, despite objections from some disability advocates over the lack of a process in place for appealing the new regulations to the state Education Department. The board then directed staff to draft regulations that include an appeals process for parents who disagree with the way local school boards are implementing the rules.
