- TVA notes progress in recovery programs for nuclear plants
The Tennessee Valley Authority noted progress in recovery programs for its nuclear plants, including the Browns Ferry facility in Alabama, which received a poor safety finding from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission last year. Preventive maintenance and more training are part of TVA's recovery program. "When you get to turning around a fleet, there's things you have to do, and it takes time to do them," said Preston Swafford, the utility's executive vice president and chief nuclear officer. - USAF concerned Texas site lacks personnel to maintain Air Force One
As Boeing moves its military aircraft maintenance operations from Kansas to Texas, the Air Force has voiced concerns that the new site does not have enough employees qualified to maintain the two 747s used as Air Force One. Boeing said at the beginning of the year that "as many as 400 jobs could be added in San Antonio, some through transfers." But Air Force contracting officer Margaret Wright was unconvinced and wrote Boeing a letter in July asking it to submit "a detailed plan by mid-August on how it would retain and train personnel" for maintenance of the special jets. - Military looks into CBM for equipment, weapons systems
Researchers from the Air Force, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Office of Naval Research are providing the Army Research Laboratory with data to investigate condition-based maintenance of equipment and weapons systems. CBM is a method of predicting maintenance needs in real time, as opposed to setting benchmarks for maintenance that may or may not be needed when those benchmarks come up. Through CBM, usage of equipment and weapons is tracked to help researchers determine when parts will need to be serviced or replaced. Defense News
