Obama picks REI chief to head Interior Dept.
President Barack Obama named REI President and CEO Sally Jewell as his pick to succeed Ken Salazar as Secretary of the Interior. Jewell is a trained engineer who worked in oil fields and banks before taking the helm at the $2 billion-a-year outdoor clothing and gear retailer. "She knows that there's no contradiction between being good stewards of the land and our economic progress, that, in fact, those two things need to go hand and hand," Obama said. USA Today (2/6)

Creating Accountability
Why does Norway care about Latin American trees?
Norway is investing hundreds of millions of dollars in Guyana in a bid to slow deforestation. The move is being pitched as a laboratory for future global climate strategies. "It's a recognition that climate change is a global problem that can't be solved by any one country: What happens in Guyana will affect Norway, so Norway might as well invest in climate solutions around the world," Ariel Schwartz writes. U.K. regulators wrong to ban Sodastream campaign, marketer argues
British regulators were wrong to ban a TV ad highlighting the reductions in waste consumers could achieve by switching to Sodastream instead of drinking bottled soda, writes eco-marketer Giles Robertson. Banning the ad "doesn't look good for the creative industry, for the environment, or for innovator/challenger brands," Robertson argues. GreenWiseBusiness.co.uk (U.K.) (2/6)
The Responsible Leader
Burn rubber, but in a harmonious way, Pirelli CEO says
Italian tire company Pirelli gains airtime and prestige by supplying Formula 1 teams, but CEO Marco Tronchetti Provera says he's also focused on being a responsible and eco-conscious businessman. Powering Tomorrow
New class of turbines allowing wind power to compete with fossil fuels
Technological improvements are boosting the efficiency of wind turbines, creating a new generation of machines that can compete with fossil fuels, experts said. Because of innovations in technology, the average cost of wind power has dropped from 15 cents per kilowatt hour in 1991 to 6.5 cents per kilowatt hour, which is about the same price of new plants running on natural gas, said Ryan Wiser, deputy group leader for electricity markets and policy at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Engage. Innovate. Discuss.
Can you still remember your company's values?
A company's highfalutin statement of values won't count for much if nobody can remember it, writes Mary Jo Asmus. Keep your company's statement of purpose short and to the point, and consider investing in gimmicks to make them more memorable. "Print them on wallet-size cards, have them in your e-mail signature line and/or have an artist come up with pleasing wall hangings," Asmus suggests. SmartBrief/SmartBlog on Leadership (2/6)
I have a great job at REI today, but there's no role that compares than the call to serve my country."
