  • Study finds greater risk of stroke following hip replacement
    Adults who underwent a total hip replacement had a higher risk of suffering an ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke two weeks after the procedure than those who didn't get the surgery, a Dutch study found. Researchers noted that antiplatelet therapy following discharge was associated with lower odds of ischemic stroke in the six weeks after the procedure.   • EHR incentives reach $8.36B for Medicare, Medicaid providers
    CMS has paid $8.36 billion in EHR incentives to 165,800 doctors and hospitals through October. Medicare payments to eligible providers and hospitals during October amounted to $435 million, while Medicaid incentives paid to professionals and hospitals for adopting, using and upgrading EHRs totaled $210 million.   • Mich. hospitals report gains in care quality measures
    Michigan hospitals worked to prevent hospital-associated infections, reduced the number of patients who left emergency departments without being seen and lowered rates of elective early births, according to a quality report by the Michigan Health & Hospital Association.   • Flu, prolonged fever during pregnancy linked to autism in study
    Mothers who reported having influenza or experiencing a prolonged fever during pregnancy were more likely to have children with autism spectrum disorder than those who had not had flu or long-lasting fevers, Danish researchers found. The study, published in the journal Pediatrics, showed that common infections such as respiratory ailments, colds and urinary tract infections were not significantly linked to increased autism risk.   • Risk of death higher with rheumatoid arthritis and depression
    People who were diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis as well as depression had double the risk of dying during the study period compared with those without depressive symptoms, according to a study presented at a meeting of the American College of Rheumatology.
