Recycling industry is in crisis

GPI SmartBrief | Jun 24, 2015

Recycling used to be a money-making business, but more than 2,000 municipalities now operate loss-making recycling facilities, according to Waste Management. That can partly be blamed on the big blue bins used to collect recyclable materials, which do nothing to encourage curbside sorting of waste left for collection. The shift toward lighter packaging materials, which has made it more difficult to amass a ton of recyclables, could also be a factor in the country's stagnant recovery rate, according to industry experts.
