Review: Basal cell carcinoma responds best to surgery

ASDS Skin Source SmartBrief | Sep 03, 2014

A review in the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology found that surgery continues to be the best therapy for basal cell carcinoma. Evidence from 40 studies was analyzed, and the methods reviewed included radiotherapy, light therapy, topical treatments and oral drugs. "The available data suggest that surgical methods remain the gold standard in BCC treatment, with Mohs micrographic surgery typically utilized for high-risk lesions," the review concluded. The study team identified suitable alternatives, including radiotherapy for older patients. Healio (free registration) (09/01)
