Algorithm for appendicitis in children decreases need for CT, study finds

Ultrasound SmartBrief | Jul 17, 2014

Following an algorithm that uses information from tests including physical exam, surgery consultation and ultrasound results can help prevent CT imaging in pediatric patients with suspect appendicitis, according to a study published in Surgery. The study found that CT use in pediatric patients suspected to have appendicitis fell from 38% to 19% after implementing the algorithm, while negative appendectomies slightly increased by only 2 percentage points.
