1. Novartis to link pricing of heart failure drug to clinical outcomes

AHIP Solutions SmartBrief | Jul 01, 2015

Novartis, which anticipates approval of its heart failure drug Entresto in August, has plans to test a new pricing model that assumes some risk for clinical outcomes. The plan involves offering Entresto at a discounted price, then receiving higher payments if the drug cuts the need for hospitalization. "We are beginning to share the risk," said David Epstein, head of pharmaceuticals at Novartis. Reuters (06/30)

2. Report predicts strong growth for virtual care, consults

AHIP Solutions SmartBrief | Jun 29, 2015

A Tractica report predicts telemedicine virtual visits will hit 158.4 million in 2020, up from 19.7 million last year. Better videoconferencing tools, physician shortages and increased broadband use are among the factors that could drive the rapid growth of the telehealth market. On the other hand, the lack of reimbursement and the resistance of patients, doctors and regulatory authorities to virtual consultations could hinder wider adoption. HIT Consultant (06/25)

3. ED visits for dental problems doubled from 2000 to 2012

AHIP Solutions SmartBrief | Jul 02, 2015

Some 2.2 million people in the U.S. visited an emergency department in 2012 for a dental problem, compared with 1.1 million in 2000, according to an American Dental Association analysis of government data. The average cost per visit is $749 if the patient is not hospitalized, as some are, and most of the problems are preventable, experts say. About 64% of seniors and more than one-third of working-age adults lack dental insurance, and even in states that cover some dental care under Medicaid, many patients cannot find a dentist who will treat them because reimbursement rates are so low. 5. Supreme Court ruling backs cornerstone of ACA success

AHIP Solutions SmartBrief | Jun 26, 2015

Affordable Care Act tax credits and subsidies encouraged young people and those with moderate incomes to enroll in health insurance plans, data indicate, and opened access to health insurance across the U.S. In 2014, 20% fewer people were uninsured than in 2013, and about 87% of the more than 7 million people enrolled through the federal exchange benefited from tax credits. The Supreme Court upheld that support in Thursday's ruling that allows assistance to exchange shoppers regardless of whether they purchase coverage through a federal or state marketplace. Women who experienced a traumatic event but did not develop PTSD were 45% more likely to have a heart attack or stroke, researchers report in the journal Circulation.
