Construction firms getting squeezed by increasing materials and labor costs and slower increases in what they charge to build projects

AGC SmartBrief | Feb 15, 2017

The cost of materials used in construction rose markedly faster than the price of completed buildings, according to a new analysis of federal producer price data released by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials cautioned that potential restrictions on the use of imported construction materials threaten to drive up the price of infrastructure, buildings and new homes and apartments. "Steep price hikes have hit a wide range of key materials used in construction in the past few months, and contractors have received numerous letters from vendors announcing large additional increases in the next month or two," said Ken Simonson, the association's chief economist. "For the most part, contractors cannot pass these costs along on projects already underway, and the data show they are not yet able to price new buildings at a level that reflects their rising materials and labor costs." Construction employment in Jan. reaches highest level since 2008; contractors raise pay faster than other sectors to fill openings

AGC SmartBrief | Feb 06, 2017

Construction employment increased by 36,000 jobs in January to the highest level since November 2008 as employers increased pay in an effort to address a chronic worker shortage, according to an analysis of new government data by the Associated General Contractors of America. The association urged public officials to strengthen training and education programs to prepare more workers for careers in the high-paying construction field. "This report aligns with what contractors have been telling the association -- that the construction industry is still eager to add workers," said Ken Simonson, the association's chief economist. "The employment gains would be even larger if there were enough workers with the right skills available to hire." Read the full press release.

Construction employment declines in 110 of 358 metro areas as businesses urge President Trump to deliver on infrastructure promise

AGC SmartBrief | Feb 02, 2017

Construction employment declined in 110 out of 358 metro areas between December 2015 and December 2016, was stagnant in another 65 and increased in 183, according to a new analysis of federal employment data released by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials noted that the disappointing new jobs data coincides with data showing a drop in most infrastructure spending in 2016 and comes out as a broad coalition of business, labor and transportation interests from across the country urged President Donald Trump to deliver on his promise to rebuild the country's aging infrastructure. "There are two main reasons so few areas added construction jobs last year -- they couldn't find enough new workers to hire or they couldn't find enough work to require new hiring," said Ken Simonson, the association's chief economist. "In some markets, the solution is more workforce development measures, while other markets need new demand for construction before firms will begin adding jobs. In particular, spending on critical transportation, sewage and water infrastructure declined last year." Read the full news release.
