Construction employment rises in 39 states and D.C. over latest 12 months; yet only 23 states and D.C. add jobs from June to July

AGC SmartBrief | Aug 22, 2016

Thirty-nine states added construction jobs between July 2015 and July 2016, while construction employment only increased in 23 states and the District of Columbia between June and July, according to analysis of Labor Department data released today by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials said construction employment likely declined in many states because firms have had growing difficulty locating qualified workers to hire. "Depending on market segment and geography, many firms report they are having a hard time finding enough workers to keep pace with demand," said Stephen E. Sandherr, chief executive officer for the association. "While there is slack in key segments like infrastructure and parts of the country that are struggling economically, many of these declines likely have more to do with firms not being able to find workers than not being able to find work." AGC Charities seeks donation of portable bathroom, shower facility for its D.C.-area Centennial Charity Project

AGC SmartBrief | Aug 15, 2016

AGC Charities Inc. is getting ready to begin work on its Centennial Operation Opening Doors project. The project, the group's most ambitious yet, involved renovating a historical dairy barn in Boyds, Md., to serve as the new main facility for Warrior Canine Connection. WCC uses veterans with unseen injuries like PTSD and traumatic brain injuries to train service dogs to help veterans with mobility and mental issues. As part of the project, many volunteers will work in extreme conditions as we prepare the barn for rehabilitation. To that end we are looking for a firm willing to donate and service a portable toilet and shower facility for the better part of a year. Any firm donating such a facility will receive significant recognition for its support. Please contact Brian Turmail at turmailb@agc.org or 703-459-0238 for more information.

Construction employment increases in 228 of 358 metro areas between June 2015 and 2016 as firms struggle to find qualified workers to hire

AGC SmartBrief | Aug 04, 2016

Construction employment increased in 228 out of 358 metro areas, was unchanged in 48 and declined in 82 between June 2015 and June 2016, according to a new analysis of federal employment data released today by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials urged Congress to act on legislation to reform and increase federal funding for career and technical education to encourage more high school students to pursue high-paying careers in construction. "Contractors are adding employees in most parts of the country, while construction job losses are primarily in areas that are most affected by the steep decline in oil and gas drilling," said Ken Simonson, the association's chief economist, adding that construction employment hit new peak levels in 32 metro areas. "However, increases in construction employment are becoming less widespread as more contractors run into difficulty finding qualified workers." Read the full news release.

Construction spending declines in June for 3rd consecutive month, but results for H1 of 2016 outpace Jan.-June 2015 totals

AGC SmartBrief | Aug 02, 2016

Construction spending decreased in June for the third month in a row, but most segments posted solid increases in the first half of 2016 compared with the same period in 2015, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials said spending appears to have leveled off after a strong early start to the year, prompted by mild winter weather conditions in many parts of the country. "The drop in construction spending over the past three months is probably more a reflection of the very strong gains posted early in the year than of cooling demand for construction," said Ken Simonson, the association's chief economist. "Nearly every major segment had first-half gains of more than 5% compared with a year ago. Contractors, surveys and the media all continue to report plenty of projects are starting or will soon." Take AGC's Workforce Survey

AGC SmartBrief | Jul 29, 2016

We continue to hear from many of you that the labor market has become tighter since AGC of America last surveyed its members about the extent of workforce shortages. While it is clear that worker shortages are a growing concern, and in some cases a significant problem, for many contractors, we feel it is important to continue our efforts to better quantify where these shortages are taking place, how severe they are, and what steps firms are taking to both cope with tight labor markets and improve the supply of new, qualified workers. That is why we are asking you to take a few minutes to complete the following workforce survey that we prepared. Your responses will help us better define the problem to elected and appointed officials, the media, educators and your peers within the business community. The more people understand the scope, and consequences, of a tight construction labor market, the more likely they are to act on the measures we identify in our Workforce Development Plan that are designed to make it easier for school systems, local associations and private firms to establish career and technical education and training programs.
