Radioiodine scans tied to better thyroid cancer survival odds

SNMMI SmartBrief | Jul 25, 2016

Researchers from the University of Michigan found that patients with thyroid cancer who underwent radioiodine scans had improved survival, compared with those who received other imaging tests. The findings in The BMJ, based on 1998 to 2011 data involving more than 28,000 thyroid cancer patients in the US, suggest the approach is most useful in patients responsive to radioactive iodine treatment and in those whose blood tests show elevated levels of a specific tumor marker, researchers said.
