"Flash crash" investigator provides research on cause of stock volatility

SIFMA SmartBrief: Operations and Technology Edition | Feb 12, 2015

Andrei Kirilenko, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor and former chief economist for the Commodity Futures Trading Commission who led the investigation into the "flash crash" of 2010, has discovered that random variance in trade execution speeds creates volatility in stock prices. Kirilenko found that higher latency, or longer trading intervals, triggers alarms inside traders' computer systems and consequently effects changes in trading behavior. Latency's random variable has "a strong predictive power" over volatility, Kirilenko says, and suggests that latency itself can be traded. Bloomberg (02/10)
