Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media SmartBrief | Mar 02, 2017

Women are turned off by seeing other women portrayed as stereotyped characters on screen, finds a new study from the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media and J. Walter Thompson. Of the 1,000 women surveyed in the US and UK, 66% say they turn off television and films when women are portrayed negatively, and another 25% tune out when not enough female characters are present on screen. The study also found that 74% of US millennials seek out TV shows and films with complex female characters, and a majority of both US and UK viewers want to see more female characters who are scientists, corporate leaders and politician.
