Patients have an unprecedented opportunity to contribute to research

Patients have the power to accelerate medical science by allowing researchers to aggregate and study their health data, but privacy concerns lead many to refuse, writes David Agus, a professor of medicine and engineering at the University of Southern California. "Patients understandably don't want their acquaintances and employers to know all their private health information. But we cannot let these fears suppress the powerful insights medical data can offer us," Agus writes. Policies that mandate the use of data encryption and forbid discrimination would help patients feel more comfortable releasing their data, Agus suggests.
