Photos, Video: Superstar crane makes debut at Tappan Zee Bridge

ASCE SmartBrief | Apr 27, 2015

It's officially known as the Left Coast Lifter, but at the Tappan Zee Bridge construction site it's affectionately known as "I Lift NY." The super crane can lift up to 2,000 tons, and the entire bridge project was designed around the crane. Its first lift was to raise and place a 650-ton cap for the bridge. "That's a game changer," said Ted Zoli, national chief bridge engineer for HNTB. "It's not just the pile caps that are going to be placed that way. ... This kind of crane allows us to set an entire span of superstructure at once." Journal News (White Plains, N.Y.) (tiered subscription model), The (04/26)
