Engineers confront challenges with asymmetrical design

ASCE SmartBrief | Mar 25, 2015

The southern section of the $77 million, 15-story Medical and Graduate Education Building at Columbia University in New York is testing the limits of structural engineering. The asymmetrical design has cantilevered floors, some of which slope, the columns used to build the structure had to weave around sections of the design, causing the load paths to vary. The contractor, Sciame Construction, estimates that the building took 50% longer to build than a regular structure. Engineering News-Record (03/24)
