New PTSD diagnostic standards might leave some vets out in the cold

AMSUS SmartBrief | Aug 20, 2014

One-third of soldiers diagnosed with PTSD under the old American Psychiatric Association standards would not be diagnosed with PTSD under the new standards released in May 2013, according to a study published in The Lancet Psychiatry. More research is needed to identify the effect of the new diagnostic standards on care, said lead author Charles Hoge. To be diagnosed with PTSD under the new standards, patients must report avoidance behaviors, but troops are taught to ignore their fears and might not engage in avoidance, says Alexander McFarlane, a professor of psychiatry and director of the University of Adelaide Centre for Traumatic Stress Studies.
