Study of "Biggest Loser" contestants shows how the body fights weight loss

AHIP Solutions SmartBrief | May 03, 2016

A study of former contestants from the weight-loss show "The Biggest Loser" found that many have put back on most or all of the weight they lost, and the biology of obesity is largely to blame. Researchers found that the contestants' resting metabolic rates slowed to astonishingly low levels, forcing one contestant who finished the show at 191 pounds to eat 800 fewer calories a day than expected for a man his size just to maintain his current 295 pounds. The findings, published in the journal Obesity, shed light on how the body responds to weight loss and could spark new treatments.
