Inexpensive offloading options for diabetic foot ulcers

Patients with diabetic foot ulcers might face financial challenges that make weight offloading difficult, writes Christina Le, director of clinical operations at Wound Care Advantage. Total contact casting is considered the gold standard, but it might be inappropriate for petite or frail patients, and it may create a safety threat or financial hardship if it interferes with driving. Many insurance plans do not cover orthotic shoes, but Le lists some inexpensive orthotic shoes that might be good alternatives. Today's Wound Clinic magazine (Jan./Feb. 2015)
