Many VTEs may not be preventable, study says

A study in JAMA Surgery found 47% of Johns Hopkins Hospital patients with hospital-acquired venous thromboembolism had received "defect-free" care. Researchers said it would be unfair for the CMS to financially penalize hospitals for VTEs that cannot be prevented and urged policymakers to improve quality measures used to assess VTE prevention.
