The American Thoracic Society released new guidelines for ICU decision-making to prevent conflicts between hospital staff and family members. The guidelines, supported by the Society of Critical Care Medicine, are published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. They call for medical staff and family involvement in deciding treatment of critically ill patients, proactive communication, and the early use of experts such as palliative care and ethics consultants if conflicts arise. eMPR.com (05/18) Medscape (free registration) (05/15)
