- ANA supports bill expanding nurses' home health care authority
The American Nurses Association called on Congress to support the Home Health Care Planning Improvement Act permitting advanced practice registered nurses to sign home health care plans and certify Medicare patients for home health benefits. - Ind. law creates new midwife licensure path
An Indiana law that took effect Monday allows certified professional midwives with federal licenses to obtain state licensure, replacing an older statute that allowed only certified nurse midwives licensed by the state to assist at home births. Most Indiana CNWs practice in hospitals. The law creates a certified direct-entry midwife license to allow practitioners, in collaboration with a physician, to assist with home births. - Law prompts widened access to vaccines in Ind.
Indiana legislation to boost patients' access to vaccines prompted Walgreen to considerably widen vaccine accessibility throughout its 204 locations in the state. Prescriptions will no longer be necessary for patients ages 65 and up to obtain the pneumococcal vaccine, while patients ages 11 and up can receive the human papillomavirus vaccine, meningococcal vaccine, influenza vaccine and tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis vaccine without a prescription. - Report offers snapshot of public health nurse workforce
Almost 40% of state and local health departments across the U.S. said they lack resources needed to fill vacant nursing positions, according to a report released by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. While public health nurses in the survey expressed concerns about job stability, pay and career development, they had high levels of job satisfaction and felt they were contributing to their communities. - St. Louis hospital tests new hand-washing system
St. Mary's Health Center in St. Louis is testing a new hand-washing system, even though the hospital already had a 90% compliance rate with its current program. Nurses wear badges that detect evaporating alcohol from freshly sanitized hands, and a green light on the badge indicates to patients that the nurse's hands are clean. The badges are placed in a docking station after each shift to track compliance, which has risen to 97% and 99% in the two testing units. St. Louis Post-Dispatch
