Being managed out by an employer can be a subtle process, characterized by shrinking responsibilities, exclusion from meetings and increased criticism, writes organizational psychologist David Burkus. Look for those signs early on, initiate direct conversations with your managers, understand the broader organizational context and evaluate your own performance. "Here's the one upside of being managed out rather than abruptly fired: it gives you time. You're not blindsided. You have a window to prepare, and how you use that window matters," Burkus writes.
