Hawaiian language key in Maui wildfire cleanup effort

Members of the US Army Corps of Engineers, who are helping with recovery from last year's wildfires on Maui, recently received language and cultural sensitivity training to help them connect with Native Hawaiians and understand local history, heritage and way of life. A cultural liaison led the workshop on behalf of the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement to teach about various Hawaiian words and the proper ways to say the names of foods, plants and area landmarks.

Pre-k students at a school in New York are learning American Sign Language to help them communicate with peers who are deaf or hard of hearing. Some of the students are practicing their ASL skills at home with family members, and teacher David Chanin says the language could become an elective in middle and high schools.

Museum's books reimagine US Latino history for students

Discovering diverse narratives in US history, "Nuestras Voces" merges storytelling with historical facts, inviting young readers to explore the experiences of Latino figures through four immersive diary-style novels, writes Emily Key, head of education at the National Museum of the American Latino. In this blog post, Key shares that through these books, the museum seeks to foster intergenerational dialogues while celebrating culture and heritage, including one book that tells the story of a girl who learns about the inspiration for her name, the Tejano singer Selena.
