- PERC exec: Plan ahead, work with community on bulk plants
Propane marketers who are looking to build bulk plants should work closely with the community to establish relationships and build trust to dispel negative perceptions about propane, industry experts say. The Propane Education & Research Council also offers resources to help retailers educate communities about propane's safety. "Ultimately, [propane] is not only a safety issue ... but it's about [the community's] property values and things of that sort," said Stuart Flatow, PERC's vice president of safety and training. - Wis. company helps propane startups build their business
Wisconsin-based Draeger Propane is not just focused on expanding its sales, it is also in the business of helping other entrepreneurs who want to start their own propane business. "We have helped four or five along over the years. These companies didn't have the resources or knowledge base at the time of induction. We wanted to help these individuals because we know how difficult it is to build a business and finance the assets needed to grow a business," said Josh Schmoll, Draeger Propane's location manager. The company boosts its sales by tapping new markets so as not to "steal gallons" from other propane retailers in the area, he added. LPGasMagazine.com

- Device measures remaining propane fuel in the tank
German system supplier Truma has developed a device that can measure how much propane is left inside the tank. The LevelChecker is operated by touching its tip to the side of the tank and pressing a button. The device emits an ultrasonic signal to determine the tank's fuel level. Gizmodo

- Ga. school bus drivers flaunt skills at safety competition
More than 60 Georgia school bus drivers competed at the recent Georgia Pupil Transportation Competition. The drivers' skills in parking, maneuvering and driving through tight spaces were tested during the competition. "I believe it has helped me drive ... more safely," said one of the contestants, Melanie Paulin. "I pay more attention to how I maneuver my bus and the little tricks and turns it takes to get your bus in and out of tight places." WMGT-TV (Macon, Ga.)
